Shandon boasts a welcoming and thriving club environment. There are a number of men’s and women’s playing groups as well as a junior academy which provides a pathway for young golfers to become involved in club activities and competition. Shandon has always had strong representation in interclub events and has seen a number of golfers achieve national and international success. Our resident professional Glenn Naylor is an NZPGA member. He offers lessons and stocks a full range of clubs, clothing and accessories. Club and cart hire is also available. There are good clubhouse facilities which are available to hire for functions such as conferences and special occasion parties.Shandon Golf Club has existed on its current site on Gear Island since 1927, but it did not assume its current name until the following year, having initially been known as Johnsonville Golf Club.It was subsequently named after Shandon in Northern Ireland, which was the home town of the club captain at the time, J.M. Ellis. A new clubhouse was soon erected and the club thrived, with membership growing rapidly.
Shandon has produced many fine players over the years who have gone on to earn national and international recognition.Marilyn Smith, the daughter of the then club professional Tony, became the first New Zealand woman to play professionally on the LPGA Tour in the United States. She enjoyed a fine career and went on to become an equally accomplished teacher.Matthew Lane, who joined the club as a junior in 1981, won the New Zealand Open title in 1998, an incredible story as he had to pre-qualify at the start of the week that ended with him winning that prestigious tournament.Andrew Green was also the toast of Shandon when he won the New Zealand Amateur Championship in 2006, the first success in this event by a Wellington amateur in 29 years.Mark Brown, another Shandon product, has enjoyed a successful professional career, winning the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2008. Mark memorably shot a 59 at the Tauranga Open in 2014, which included a nine-under back nine of 26!
