The Men's Masters team came up just short in their quest for an unprecedented 3rd consecutive national interprovincial title at Gisborne in early November.
Entering the tournament as the 2021 and 2022 champions, the team of Jonno Cane, skipper EJ Nicholson, Mark Whalen, Brad Rowland, Matt Pegg and Mark Bowden, along with Manager Steve Weir, got away to a good start with results against their first 5 opponents.
Wellington's 6th opponent Auckland, on the Thursday afternoon proved to be the difference with the northerners getting home 3.5 - 1.5 over the black and yellow.
Despite 2 good wins on the final day, the championship result was left in Auckland's hands, an "upset" result against the blue and white Wellingtons only chance. It wasn't to be as Auckland powered home to see Wellington finish 3rd.
This still continued an amazing run since EJ took over the captaincy of the side in 2016 - in this period two 4ths, two 3rds, two runners up and two national titles. The group already looks keenly towards Invercargill the venue for the 2024 event.
