In 1969 Major George Bennett, Camp Commandant of Trentham Army Camp asked two of his staff, Gordon Leighton and Jack Crawford to form a golf committee. The land available was swampy in places and overgrown with tussock and bullrushes. In essence this was the beginning of the Trentham Camp Golf Club. From the swamp and tussock, six greens were carved out. Over the ensuing years sheep were cleared from the course, drains were established and greens and fairways were developed until finally in 1981, the last four holes were completed turning the course into an 18 hole layout.
The course shares space with other community groups including the Trentham Archery Club, Heretaunga Pistol Club, Trentham Rifle Range and the Wellington Model Aeroplane Club. All this just a 30 minute drive from the Wellington CBD.
